Read here an interview with Bishop Long Van Nguyen ofm conv, From Boat Person to Bishop.

Social Justice Sunday is celebrated on 27 September with the Bishops focussing this year on justice for refugees and asylum seekers.

On 9 September, the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council will be launching the Bishops’ 2015 – 2016 Social Justice Statement, ‘For Those Who’ve Come Across the Seas: Justice for Refugees and Asylum Seekers’, in preparation for Social Justice Sunday. The Bishops address the divisive national debate over asylum seekers who arrive by boat. They set the nation’s current deterrence-based response in the broader context of the global movement of people and the dreadful experience of the flight from persecution. They highlight the true reality of the circumstances facing asylum seekers and appeal to our nation’s history of welcoming those seeking protection in Australia.
