120 Years of Catholic Education in Charlton

On Saturday October 21 and Sunday October 22, 2017 we will be celebrating 120 years of Catholic Education in Charlton – this is also Charlton Show weekend.

The following information appeared in an advertisement in the East Charlton Tribune on 16.01.1897. “The new R.C. School will be opened on Monday next 18th inst, at the Church. M. Costello”

For many years the school was referred to as the ‘Roman Catholic School’ although it was registered as ‘St Joseph’s Primary School’ in 1906.

The school was in the hands of lay teachers until 1924 when Our Lady of the Mission Sisters took charge until 1968. In 1969 the Sisters of Mercy arrived. In 1976 St Joseph’s reverted to a Primary School and McAuley College opened as a multi- campus College to cater for secondary classes.

By 1979 the school had come full circle and once again was led by a lay principal.

We invite any past pupils and staff to attend our celebrations.
