A Valuable Legacy

St. Columba’s Parish, Ballarat North received a valuable legacy from one of its former parish priests that lives on in the pastoral practice of the present community. This is the practice of donating 10% of its annual Thanksgiving Program to causes beyond the parish.

World Environment Day 2007

This year World Environment Day takes place on Tuesday 5 June and the theme is MELTING ICE – A HOT TOPIC. The polar regions have profound significance for the earth’s climate and ultimately for its environments, eco systems, and human society - hence the choice of theme for 2007. Our Diocesan Environment Working Party encourages exploring climate change further through the websites below, and taking whatever action you can to better care for our planet. Focus On

This year the Church commemorates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sunday on July 1. The theme is ‘Love one another as I Love you’. To assist in the celebration of this day, the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Catholic Council’s (NATSICC) have provided resources and information for Parishes with and without Indigenous Congregations as well as Children’s Activities that help illustrate Jesus’ love for us.

Planning continues for the visit of the WYD Cross and Icon to the Diocese in October this year. Stacey Atkins continues to keep us updated regarding events and planning for World Youth Day and its related events.


On Friday, 18 May, the Most Reverend Peter Connors, Bishop of Ballarat, officiated over the formal Blessing of the new Centacare central office at Peel Street North, Ballarat. Assistance in the funding of the new building was provided by the Catholic Diocese of Ballarat and the Department for Victorian Communities. The Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs, the Hon. James Merlino formally Opened the office and lunched three new Youth Programs that Centacare recently received funding for.

Catholic Pastoral Planners from across Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea recently attended the three day National Pastoral Planning Network Conference in Ballarat. The Conference was held at Ballarat Lodge and approximately sixty participants from Diocesan offices, Diocesan Pastoral Councils and the Pastoral Projects Office of the Australian Bishops Conference took part.
