Gospel Good News

4th Sunday of Easter - Year B – John 10:11-18.

Each year in Eastertime we explore the image of Jesus as the good shepherd.  Most of us don’t meet shepherds and flocks of sheep in our everyday life, but Jesus explains what the image means.   The sheep are so important to him that “he lays down his life” for them because they are “his own.”  Jesus told the disciples before his death, “I know my own and my own know me.” Amazingly he tells them, “And there are other sheep I have that are not of this fold, and these I have to lead as well.  They too will listen to my voice.”  Jesus’ message of care and love is not only for those inside the fold (or fence), Jesus seeks and reaches out to everyone.  We reflect on the care and love that Jesus offers us.

After Easter Day our gospel readings focus on the ‘appearances’ of Jesus after his death.  The disciples are together talking about how two of them had met Jesus on the road to Emmaus where “they had recognised Jesus at the breaking of bread.” Suddenly Jesus was there with them saying, “Peace be with you!” They were stunned and frightened. Jesus said, “Why are these doubts rising in your hearts? Yes, it’s me. Look at my hands and feet.” They couldn’t believe it, they didn’t know what to say.  So Jesus suggested they share a meal together.  Jesus “ate before their eyes”, a living human.  And “he opened their minds to understand” what had been prophesied through the scriptures, “that the Christ would suffer and on the third day rise from the dead” and that forgiveness would be preached to all. We reflect on recognising Jesus at the breaking of the bread.
