Birth of John the Baptist - Year B - Lk 1:54-66,80.

The celebration of the birth of John the Baptist is a special feast day and so we celebrate it in our Sunday Mass.  We hear St Luke telling us about John being born.  He was born to Mary’s sister Elizabeth when she thought she wasn’t ever going to have a child, but joyfully this baby boy was born, a few months ahead of Jesus, his cousin.  When it was time to choose the baby’s name, his father Zechariah who was unable to speak, wrote on a tablet, ‘His name is John.’ Amazingly, “at that instant his power of speech returned and he spoke and praised God.”  Everyone was filled with awe and “treasured it in their hearts.” They wondered, ‘What will this child turn out to be?’  Scripture tells us John grew to adulthood and lived in the wilderness. Then he returned to prepare the way for the Lord, baptising and proclaiming Jesus as saviour. We reflect on what we treasure in our hearts.
