Diocesan News

The Australian Catholic Bishops Conference is making available an email address condolencebook@catholic.org.au for anyone wishing to write messages of condolence following the death of Pope Francis.  You may find it useful to express your grief. The ABCB will find an appropriate and respectful way of passing them on to the Nuncio.

  • Maria read for us from the prophet Isaiah. “The spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” These words apply most fully to Jesus. He is the one above all who has been anointed by God, anointed to bring good news. Yet, this text applies also to Fr Kevin. In his baptism, in his confirmation and in his ordination, Fr Kevin shared in Jesus’ anointing. He shared in Jesus’ mission to spread the good news of God’s love.
  • As the years went by, Fr Kevin was always looking for ways to share the gospel. For example, in the year 2000 he began producing some pages of notes that he shared with a network of contacts. By that stage, emails had become popular, so Fr Kevin shared his reflections by email. He linked the gospel with current topics. He was particularly concerned with issues of justice around the world. That included concern for the environment. In that he was rather ahead of his time. He was writing about restoration of the environment in 2000. That was 15 years before Pope Francis wrote an encyclical about care for the environment and made the issue more prominent.
