Fr Francis Moloney SDB died in his home city of Melbourne aged 85 on November 8, 2025.
Bishop Paul said that Fr Frank made a great contribution to the Church in Australia and beyond, particularly through his teaching of the Scriptures. The priests and people of the Ballarat diocese were among those who benefitted from his generous service, including his talks to the priests during a retreat at Halls Gap.
Fr Kevin Lenehan, Master of Catholic Theological College, where Fr Frank taught for many years has written a tribute to Fr Frank.

“The death of Father Francis Moloney SDB brings to a close a life of remarkable commitment, fidelity and scholarship,” said Australian Catholic Bishops Conference President, Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB.
“A member of the Salesians of Saint John Bosco, Fr Moloney understood instinctively the wisdom of St John Bosco’s famous saying that ‘it is not enough for young people to be loved; they have to know that they are loved’.
