In 1875, St Patrick’s Church, St Arnaud, was built. The Parish of St Patrick’s was established in 1876 and was initially part of the Carisbrook Parish. In July 1906, Bishop Joseph Higgins laid the foundation stone for our present church, which was dedicated on February 3, 1907 under the title of the Immaculate Conception Church.
Our magnificent marble altar was later installed as a gift from Count Thomas O’Loughlin. It was designed and sculpted by Fratelli Agrone of Genoa under the guidance of Parish Priest Fr Gerald Doyle.
Recently, parishioners and visitors gathered to celebrate 150 years of the continual celebration of the Eucharist and a faith that has sustained generations, providing strength, hope, and the love of our Father.
The Mass was celebrated by Fr Gerry Prunty and commenced with the hymn Hail Queen of Heav’n. Fr Gerry, reader John, and cross-bearer Philomena processed into the Church, setting a reverent tone for the celebration. The Chipperfield family presented the gifts, and the Mass concluded with the hymn Faith of Our Fathers.
A heartfelt thank you is extended to all those who contributed behind the scenes. Thanks go to Barb Hogan for providing the music and PowerPoint presentation, and to John and Marlene Arandt and Chris Dyson for their assistance in livestreaming Mass each week.
To mark the occasion, historic vestments and an altar server’s surplice were displayed throughout the church. These items are among the few remaining from the parish’s history. Many other artefacts have been entrusted to the Diocesan Archive for preservation, including the umbrella used during visits from the Bishop, after it became apparent that some items were deteriorating.
Following Mass, everyone gathered in the Parish Centre for refreshments. There was plenty for all, and many remained for lunch, sharing stories, renewing friendships and catching up with people they had not seen for some time. The room was filled with conversation, laughter and memories.
Sincere thanks to the dedicated ladies who worked tirelessly to provide the catering: Marlene, Brenda, Pauline, and Barb, as well as the parishioners who generously contributed a plate to share.
