Parish News
Earlier in the year, DOBCEL shared the difficult decision that Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School, Murtoa, will close at the end of the 2025 school year. As we move toward this transition, we also take time to honour the school’s proud 62-year history and the many staff, students, families and parishioners who have shaped its story.
Our Lady Help of Christians Primary School was founded by local Catholics in 1963 and originally staffed by the Brigidine Sisters.
On Sunday, December 14 the community and those involved over the years were invited to come together for a “Remembering Our Lady’s” community gathering. The day began with Mass at St Mary’s Church, Murtoa, at 12.30pm, followed by a lunch at the school from 1.30pm. The gathering continued at the Railway Hotel, Murtoa, from 5.00pm, where meals were available. This was an special occasion marking this important moment in the life of the parish and school community.
DOBCEL extends its heartfelt thanks to everyone connected with OLHC Murtoa for their dedication, resilience and ongoing support.
Remembering Our Lady’s – a few moments:
One very special thing Our Lady’s is known for is the beautiful artwork by local artists around the school, making it such a special place to be.

Over the years there have been many changes around Our Lady’s, but the children always had multiple areas to play in.

Our Lady’s placed a great emphasis on Performing and Visual Arts. Over the years the students put on some wonderful performances to entertain their families.

1974 saw the arrival of the first Lay Principal of our school – Veronica Slattery (from 1974 – 1976) and then after a break in teaching, came back as Principal from 1998 – 2013.

The building of our school commenced in 1961 after the land was donated and much local fundraising. On March 24, 1963 the school was blessed and officially opened.

Reflecting on the opening day of Our Lady’s – thank you to all these families who began such a wonderful journey in so many lives.

A look back at the staff and students from our first year in 1963. With hard working families and local fundraising, these children were able to attend a Catholic school in Murtoa.
