At St Mary’s Primary School Swan Hill, we are incredibly proud to offer our students a rich and engaging STEM program, providing opportunities to explore, create, design, investigate and problem-solve. A huge credit goes to our wonderful STEM teachers, whose creativity, enthusiasm and commitment bring these exciting learning experiences to life for our students.
Across Foundation and Grade 1, students have been developing their early coding skills using Bee-Bot robots, learning how to create and follow basic algorithms. Moving into Grade 2, students have explored the world of hardware and software, putting their new knowledge into action by constructing their very own computers.
Creativity and coding have been the focus in Grade 3, with students using Scratch on their Chromebooks to design and create a variety of animations. An exciting engineering challenge is currently underway in Grade 4, where students are designing, constructing and operating their own foosball arenas, combining creativity with problem-solving and design skills.
Becoming “Rust Detectives,” Grade 5 students have taken part in a rust hunt while investigating irreversible chemical changes and making connections between science and the world around them. Taking coding to another level, our Grade 6 students have extended their skills through an exciting LEGO robotics challenge, programming their creations to break into a specially constructed safe deposit box.
Adding to the excitement this term, we also celebrated National Science Week, with students putting their scientific thinking into action by creating their very own fire extinguishers.
