On Thursday, February 12, 2026, Damascus College Ballarat was honoured to welcome Bishop Paul Bird for morning tea, providing our community with the opportunity to personally thank him for his dedicated service and leadership ahead of his retirement.

Welcomed by Principal Steven Mifsud, Bishop Paul spent time with our Year 12 Youth Ministry classes during Period 2, engaging in thoughtful conversation about their current Caritas initiatives and the ways they are putting their faith into action. Students shared how they are supporting justice and outreach projects, reflecting the College’s commitment to living out our Catholic identity through service and compassion.

During his visit, Bishop Paul shared a memorable story about a conversation he once had with an advertising executive. The ad man explained that all advertising can be reduced to four simple words: “Hey, you — buy this.” “Hey” captures attention. “You” makes the message personal. “Buy this” provides a clear call to action.

Bishop Paul encouraged our students to reflect on this idea more deeply — suggesting that while advertising seeks to sell a product, the Gospel also speaks directly and personally to each of us. It calls us by name, invites us to respond, and challenges us to live lives of purpose, dignity and service to others.

Following his time with students, Bishop Paul joined staff for morning tea in the Senior Learning Centre, where he was warmly thanked for his years of pastoral care, leadership and faithful service to the Diocese and to our Damascus College community.

We are deeply grateful for Bishop Paul’s presence and guidance over many years and were privileged to acknowledge his contribution in person as he prepares for this next chapter.
