On July 22, 2026, the Diocese of Ballarat celebrated a remarkable milestone as Fr Dan Arundell marked 70 years of priesthood. Ordained at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Ballarat, on July 22, 1956, Fr Dan has dedicated his life to serving God and the people of the diocese with humility, generosity and faith.
Born in Terang and one of ten children,Fr Dan attended St Thomas’ Primary School before attending secondary school at St Patrick’s College, Ballarat, and later entering the seminary. Over seven decades, he has served in parishes across western Victoria including Mildura, Warrnambool, Swan Hill, Maryborough, Edenhope and Timboon, as well as a period of ministry in The Bronx, USA.
Wherever he served, he became known for his pastoral care, genuine interest in people and strong community connections.
Even in retirement Fr Dan continued active ministry, travelling from Ballarat to support regional parishes for many years. He also faithfully celebrated the 8.00am Sunday Mass at St Patrick’s Cathedral until 2023, forming lasting friendships with parishioners.
When reflecting on his vocation, Fr Dan speaks not of achievements but of gratitude. He gives thanks for the people and communities that have shaped his life and ministry.
As we celebrate this significant anniversary, we thank Fr Dan for his faithful witness, dedicated service and lasting impact on generations of Catholics. May God continue to bless him with health, joy and peace.
Mass was celebrated by Bishop Mark Freeman on July 22, 2026 at Nazareth House to mark Fr Dan’s anniversary. Bishop Emeritus Paul Bird and Frs Ed Moloney, Wally Tudor and Con Bagaoisan concelebrated Mass. A morning tea followed the Mass.
