World Communications Day 2025, celebrated on May 25, carries the theme “Share with gentleness the hope that is in your hearts” (cf. 1 Pet 3:15–16). Announced by Pope Francis, this theme emphasises the need to counteract the prevalent culture of aggression in media and communication. In a world where discourse often leans towards conflict and domination, Pope Francis called for a transformation in communication practices. He urges individuals to “disarm communication,” purging it of hostility and fostering dialogue rooted in respect and empathy. This message aligns with the broader context of the Jubilee of Communication, which underscores the importance of sharing hope and unity through storytelling that reflects the gentleness of Christ’s message.
World Communications Day was established by Pope Paul VI in 1967 as an annual celebration that encourages us to reflect on the opportunities and challenges that the modern means of social communication (the press, motions pictures, radio, television and the internet) afford the Church to communicate the gospel message.
